Schools Spectacular remixed for television

Relive memorable acts and performances from the past four years in a special televised Schools Spectacular event.

The annual Schools Spectacular, cancelled this year due to the pandemic, will entertain audiences with a special television broadcast next week.

The Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will air on Channel 7 on Saturday 5 December at 7pm.

The two-hour broadcast will feature memorable acts and spectacular moments from the past four years.

The show will also feature a surprise digital performance from this year’s graduating Class of 2020 with the Year 12 students sharing their passion and talents while celebrating with NSW Education for one last time.

This technical feat aims to inspire audiences as more than 70 dancers, singers, instrumental musicians and signing performers from across NSW assemble virtually for the performance.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said this event is an opportunity to revisit memories of past performances and celebrate the talents of students in NSW public schools.

“Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will be an extraordinary broadcast and a unique opportunity to look back at some of the many achievements of our talented performing arts students and their hard working and committed teachers from the past four years,” he said.

Audiences can also share their own memories and see highlights from past Schools Spectacular performances on the Schools Spectacular Facebook page.

Schools Spectacular Remixed 2020 is produced by the NSW Department of Education and proudly supported by Presenting Partners, Telstra and the NSW Teachers Federation, and Segment Partner, RØDE Microphones.

Join in the virtual NAIDOC Week celebrations

Education celebrates NAIDOC Week 2020 (8 – 15 November 2020) with the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’.

It’s a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the First Nation peoples – recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.

Schools were invited to film and submit videos to celebrate history, culture and achievements of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait students.

Secretary, Mark Scott will give an opening address on Monday, 9 November and then Aboriginal students run a Question and Answers session with Mark Scott, Cindy Berwick, President of the NSW AECG; Martin Graham, Deputy Secretary; Michelle Hall, Executive Director, Connecetd Communities and Karen Jones, Executive Director, Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships.

Tuesday will showcase how NSW public schools are embedding Aboriginal cultural practices. Special thanks to; Windale Public School Preschool, Terrigal Public School, Wilcannia Central School and Murrumbidgee Regional High School for participating.

Wednesday will highlight the outstanding achievements of Benson Igua Saulo, In-coming Consul-General to the US based in Houston (2021), as his is interviewed by current students from his former schools, Tamworth High School and Peel High School.

Thursday will see Uncle Michael Jarrett deliver a Gumbaynggirr language lesson.

Friday will close out our virtual celebration with a beautiful virtual choir led by Uncle Archie Roach. Students will join him singing ‘Took the children away’ and ‘Children came back’.

Join the virtual celebration via video streams hosted by Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships , each weekday morning, at 9:30am, during NAIDOC Week 2020.

2021 term dates now available

Most students start Friday 29 January (or Friday 5 February for Western division) in Term 1 2021.

To support a strong start to 2021, school staff will now have two school development days at the beginning of Term 1.

For 2021, students will return to school on Friday 29 January (or Friday 5 February for Western division), unless otherwise notified by the school. School term dates for 2021 are now available.

Western division schools, also known as ‘late start’ schools, are located in the far western region of NSW. Check if your school is a Late start school.

Updates to COVID-19 restrictions affecting NSW schools

Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW

NSW Health has a website to inform you of the actions you should take if you have been in a location where there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 within NSW. Monitor the site and follow the relevant health advice if you have been at any of the locations at the specified dates and times.

Students and staff who have travelled through or visited Victoria

All students and staff who have visited Victoria must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Except for students and staff who reside in a border town, all students and staff who have visited Victoria in the 14 days before the commencement of school should not attend school until they complete the 14 days self-isolation period since they left Victoria.

Students and staff who are unable to return to school due to these self-isolation requirements will be supported to learn and work remotely during the self-isolation period via the online learning hubs until they return to on-campus learning and teaching.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been in Victoria and is unwell or has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Information for students and staff on new NSW-Victoria border restrictions

The NSW Government has announced further tightening to the restrictions for people travelling across the NSW-Victorian border.

From midnight Tuesday 21 July a border zone, defined along the Murray River, will be established.

Anyone travelling from Victoria to NSW must apply for a new permit through Service NSW.

Victorian residents who have been in one of the restricted areas in Victoria in the last 14 days must not enter NSW.

Attending schools along the border

Current permits will expire at midnight, Tuesday 21 July. We strongly encourage all parents and staff to check they have a permit and if not, apply for one through Service NSW.

Students and staff who reside in Victoria will need to be eligible for a border permit to attend school in person.

Under the new public health order, the border zone has been reduced significantly.

Not all students and staff may be eligible for a border permit under the public health order. If you are not eligible for a border permit you will not be able to cross the border. Students and staff will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Further information on the new border zone is available from Service NSW.

Border permits can be rescinded at any time if a cluster outbreak in your community occurs. We encourage parents to monitor local circumstances regularly as things may change in the coming days or weeks.

Transport to and from school will run as scheduled. For travel advice to and from school refer to Transport for NSW.

New restrictions affecting boarding schools

Any student returning from Victoria to reside at a boarding school in NSW must now self-isolate for 14 days in a NSW location separate to the boarding school. They must also obtain a negative test swab from day 10 of their isolation before entering school and have written confirmation of the test result and the period spent isolating.

Those who are unable to return to boarding while they are completing the self-isolation period will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Our school will be open to welcome students back to onsite learning from the beginning of Term 3 – Tuesday 21 July 2020.

As you would be aware the border between NSW and Victoria closed as of 12:01am 8 July 2020.

Curriculum reform focuses on deep learning

Changes to the NSW school curriculum will be the biggest education shake-up in 30 years.

The reforms, announced by the NSW Government on Tuesday, will start rolling out in 2021. All Kindergarten to Year 12 students will learn the new curriculum by 2024.

The changes are in response to the NSW Curriculum Review by Professor Geoff Masters and will ensure every student is prepared and ready for their future.

The reforms are based on:

decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects
a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science
Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

Education Week to celebrate learning together

Education Week 2020 will be held from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August.

Education Week is our annual week of celebration to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.

This year’s theme is ‘Learning together’ and it reflects the incredible months of 2020 where NSW public school students have continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our schools have experienced significant disruption but our staff – in partnership with parents and carers – have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the best learning takes place when there is a partnership of students, teachers, parents, carers and the community.

“Our schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared,” Mr Scott said.

“As our lives slowly return to normal, it’s time for us to reflect on the achievements and resilience of our entire school community. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with all of you in August.”

Statewide events for Education Week include:

activities for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day on Tuesday, 4 August

Students across NSW will be back in the classroom full-time from next Monday, 25 May.

The success of the phased return to face to face teaching has demonstrated the education system and community are ready for school to come back full-time.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell thanked school communities and parents for their patience during this difficult time.

Ms Berejiklian said a return to full-time face to face teaching and learning is crucial for the education progress of every child in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

“Since starting a managed return to the classroom, we have seen a strong degree of confidence from our school communities in managing COVID-19 and a clear desire for all students to be back at school,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We expect schools to stick with the health advice – increased cleaning, access to hygiene supplies and compliance with hygience practices – and look forward to seeing all students back on campus five days a week.

“The health advice is very clear; a return to full-time face to face teaching is safe.”

Over the last two weeks schools have been working hard to support students practise good hygiene and implement new routines at school, which has been successful giving the community confidence that full-time face to face teaching can resume.

Ms Mitchell said she was eager to see students back in the classroom full-time.

“Our principals, teachers, support staff, parents and carers have gone above and beyond to continue the education of our students while we respond to this pandemic,” Ms Mitchell said.

“My priority is the education of our children. We know that parents across NSW share our desire for students to be back in school, and that is our expectation.

“Schools will need to maintain the measures and precautions they have put in place for the foreseeable future, including no assemblies and excursions.

“Teachers will be focused on identifying where their students are at in their education and we will be supporting them to recognise and assist those students who need additional help.”

Help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community by downloading the app.

Social distancing and washing your hands remain the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The COVIDSafe app, developed by the Australian Government, helps to reduce the spread by allowing health experts to find close contacts faster and more accurately.

The app does not track your location. It uses your phone's Bluetooth to record other users you come into contact with, so if they test positive, NSW Health can let you know.

Students begin return to classrooms

From Monday 11 May (Week 3) students will begin a phased return to school.

The phased return will maintain distancing in the classroom while supporting students' education and wellbeing.

Most students will continue learning from home and will only attend school 1 day each week.

Our school will continue to provide detailed information about the return to the classroom throughout the rest of Term 2.

Measures to keep schools clean and safe for all students and staff include:

25% more cleaning time focused on high-touch areas
priority deliveries of hygiene supplies including soap and hand sanitiser
local school changes to pick up, drop off, lunch and recess times and processes.

Religion and ethics lessons continue at home

Students learning from home can continue to access Special religious education (SRE) and Special education in ethics (SEE) classes.

Face-to-face SRE, SEE and Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) will not be available until schools resume normal operations.

In response to requests from school communities, SRE and SEE approved providers are delivering their authorised curriculum with modifications to allow students to learn from home from the start of Term 2.

The lesson content and the mode of delivery has been reviewed and modified for easy access by students. The approved providers recognise that learning at home will not replicate face-to-face learning at school.

NSW students to transition back to the classroom in Term 2

NSW school students will gradually transition back to the classroom during Term 2 as the Government continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell outlined the plan for students attending NSW public schools to progressively return to face-to-face learning in week three of Term 2.

Ms Berejiklian said health advice continues to be that schools remain open, and parents, teachers and students can be confident that school is safe place.

“We are grateful to all families who kept their children home from school at the end of Term 1 and to teachers who worked tirelessly to deliver education online,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This allowed us critical time to prepare our schools to develop better online learning options and for considering additional hygiene measures to allow schools to return.

“We know that nothing is more important than a child’s education, and we must begin to return our students to their classrooms in a considered way.

“Under these changes, from week three of Term 2, every student will be attending school for one day a week.

“We will look to increase the number of days students are at school in a staged way and hope to have all children back at school full-time by Term 3.

“I’d like to thank the Catholic and Independent schools for working with the NSW Government at this time, as well as staff, including teachers, principals and cleaners, for working so hard to prepare for a resumption of school.

“I’d also like to thank parents for what has been a tough month, often juggling working from home and caring for children. We hope the partial resumption of on campus learning will provide some much needed relief to those families.”

During the first stage of on-campus learning, parents will be encouraged to keep their children home except on their allocated day of face-to-face learning. Initially, about a quarter of a school’s students are expected to be on site at any one time. The specific days students will be required to attend school each week will vary from school to school and will be clearly communicated to parents.

Classes will be split across schools, allowing schools to appropriately social distance students and teachers.

As always, schools will remain open for students who need them and no child will be turned away from school.

Ms Mitchell said careful consideration had been given to support the school community, providing clarity and certainty on the path forward.

“This plan provides a clear path that balances community concerns with a need to deliver continuity of quality education,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms and provisions are in place for at-risk teachers to work from home. Drop off, pick up, recess and lunchtimes will also be staggered to ensure social distancing.”

In addition to the staged return to school, the NSW Government has committed up to $95.7 million to help keep casual and temporary school staff engaged in active work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our casual and temporary teachers and other non-teaching staff across NSW schools are critical to our education system, and will help ensure the educational outcomes for our students during this staged return,” Ms Mitchell said.

A cross-sector working group of teachers will also be established to report back to the Minister on recent innovations and educational developments assembled during the COVID-19 period that are suitable to support future educational delivery.

“It’s important that we have an inventory of the cutting edge teaching solutions and recognise the best efforts of our amazing NSW teachers during a difficult time,” Ms Mitchell said.

Teachers will have an additional day to prepare for Term 2 on Tuesday 28 April making the first day of term for students Wednesday 29 April.

Term 1 Social Skills Reports

Each year families receive a Social Skills report for their child/children at the end of term 1.

This year families will still receive a Social Skills report, however it may have sections missing. Students usually complete two sections on the back of the report which may not be completed this year due to the changes in schooling over the past few weeks.

The staff would still like to acknowledge and celebrate the work and behaviour of the students so far in 2020 so the teachers have completed their sections.

The report this year will be mailed to families on Wednesday 8 April 2020. Depending on the postal system, this may take several days to arrive at your house.

If you have moved house recently and have not alerted the school, please do so this week so the report can be mailed to the correct address.

The NSW Department of Education's advice regarding schools is very clear. No child in NSW will be turned away from school.

Schools will remain open for parents who want their children to attend irrespective of their profession or working arrangements.

The decision to keep schools open has been made based on advice from NSW Health, which has not changed.

The department will provide continuity of learning for all students both on and off campus and the Premier, for practical reasons, has encouraged parents to keep their children at home if they could.

Schools will communicate directly with parents on what learning options are available using their communication methods such as the school website, newsletters, emails and other online tools.

New COVID-19 restrictions begin as schools move towards online learning

The NSW Government has taken significant new steps to increase restrictions across the state - triggering the next level of enforcement necessary to fight COVID-19.

Following the decisions made by National Cabinet, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the shutdown to protect NSW citizens.

"I understand many in the community are worried, and these changes will affect everyday lives, and may be upsetting," Ms Berejiklian said.

"But these decisions will make us all safer, they are taken with the health of all citizens in mind, and they must be taken now.

"If you have the capacity to work from home, you should do so."

In line with health advice, from midday today, the following non-essential activities and businesses will be temporarily shut down:

pubs, registered clubs
gyms, indoor sporting venues
cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs
restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery
religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can proceed).

It is important to note essential gatherings at places such as hospitals, workplaces, constructions sites and for public transport are exempt and will continue.

As confirmed last night by the Prime Minister schools will remain open, based on health advice, which has not changed.

But from tomorrow, in NSW, for practical reasons, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home.

"Because nearly 30 per cent of children are already being kept out of school, for practical reasons NSW is encouraging parents to keep their children at home," Ms Berejiklian said.

"This will ensure there is only one unit of work, whether the student is at home or at school.

"No child will be turned away from school."

Schools to implement distancing measures

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our schools.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department of Education, today announced that schools would adopt social distancing measures requiring them to cancel assemblies, excursions, travel, some events and conferences.

Mr Scott said these measures are precautionary and designed to reduce exposure via non-essential gatherings.

"Schools have been a focus of the community and the government as the impacts of coronavirus have developed globally," Mr Scott said.

"From Monday onwards, I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions.

"The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff."

"These cancellations also extend to inter-school arts, sports, initiative activities and events.

All major arts, sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole-school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

"Local inter-school sport and other activities can proceed, but we ask organisers to ensure that as far as possible, reasonable precautions are taken," Mr Scott said.

"I trust our principals and staff to show leadership during this time."

Schools will be provided with more detailed advice and suggestions on how they can adjust their day to day activities with minimal disruption.

The department is continuing to prepare for further closures if necessary with scaling up of technology, additional training of staff and preparation of offsite lessons.

Families and students in self-isolation can find useful information to continue learning from home.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Arabic Story Time

On Tuesday, 49 excited students and parents attended Arabic Story Time in the hall afterschool. Ms Awabdy did an outstanding job of reading ‘Too Many Elephants in This House' in Arabic. This award winning children's picture book is about a boy called Eric, who has too many elephants in his house – in the living room, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, even in his bedroom! Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed it! Afterwards, students had the opportunity to work collaboratively with their parent to make their very own elephant mask. Four children won amazing lucky door prizes and afternoon tea was delicious. Thank you to Ms Awabdy, Ms Caroline Isaac, and to our lovely parent volunteer Ms Tran for their contribution in making this event a success.

Stage 2 Author Talk

Stage 2 students were thrilled to meet Yves Stening, author of the Dinner Detectives series last Thursday. During this inspiring author talk, they eagerly listened to Yves read two of his amazing picture books, ‘A Fearsome Beast and a Dumpling Feast' and ‘A Tangled Tale of Tagliatelle'. In both stories, the main characters Clementine and Aksel travel back in time and around the world, uncovering magical stories behind the everyday foods we eat.Students also thoroughly enjoyed learning about the process of creating and publishing a book, but were surprised to discover that it took the author two years and twelve drafts in order to get his first book published. National Simultaneous Story Time

Last Thursday, over 300 students participated in National Simultaneous Story Time, a campaign which aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. K-2 and some support unit classes read the very entertaining children's picture book called ‘Hickory Dickory Dash'. Sixteen lucky students won their very own copy of this magnificent picture book which is based on the children's nursery rhyme ‘Hickory Dickory Dock'. Congratulations to all our prize recipients and a special thank you to all those amazing teachers who supported this wonderful event.

April is the month of Autism Awareness.

On Wednesday 4 April the students at Fairfield West Public School celebrated Autism Awareness Day by dressing in blue. Each class created a blue flower which was planted in the garden around the flagpole. Each class had the opportunity to watch short informative videos to learn more about Autism and they enjoyed walking through the Blue Garden. Friday 16 February was a very exciting morning for Fairfield West PS learning community and the Community Hub, as the NSW Minister for Multiculturalism the Honourable Ray Williams MP visited and officially launched. The NSW Coordinator General for Refugee Resettlement (CGRR), Professor Peter Shergold and Sonja Hood the CEO of Community Hubs Australia attended to celebrate the launch of Community Hubs in the Fairfield area. The dignitaries spent time talking to parents and caregivers who attended the Friday morning course in the hub and celebrated the achievements of members of our school community. The Fairfield West Student Representative Council (SRC) is formed at the beginning of each school year. Every class from Yr 1- Yr 6 is represented by two students who are nominated and voted for by their peers. These representatives are sworn in at an official induction ceremony. In 2018, they will continue to meet to discuss student concerns and participate in making this school an even more caring and productive place of learning. Last Friday, the representatives took their pledge and were officially inducted into their role for 2018. Stage 2 - Author talk

On Thursday, two amazing authors came to our school. Their names were Katrina Nannestad and Matt Stanton.

Firstly, Katrina Nannestad spoke to us about how she develops interesting characters and three lucky people were able to dress up as the three main characters in her wonderful book - The Girl, The Dog and the Writer in Rome. Next, Matt Stanton spoke to us about how he illustrates funny characters if he has no idea what to do. He asks himself questions such as:

Does the character have big ears or small ears?

Does the character have tiny eyes or huge eyes?

Some people were even allowed to ask some questions to the authors.

It was a really thrilling day for everyone and it was really cool to meet two famous authors and talk to them in person. Thank you, Mrs De Horta for all your hard work in making books come to life!

Anzac Memorial Centenary Project

Anzac Memorial Centenary Project

Opened in 1934, the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park was built to commemorate the courage, endurance and sacrifice of Australians from NSW during the Great War (1914-1918). The Centenary Project, opening toward the end of the Centenary period in 2018, will create a new extension to the Anzac memorial. An artist, Fiona Hall proposed that a plaque be created for every town, suburb and locality around NSW that enlistees for the First World War gave as their place of address. A sample of soil collected from the area will be displayed alongside the place name. The plaques will line the walls of the Hall of Service. Fairfield West Public School had the privilege of being chosen as one of these significant sights. The Mayor of Fairfield City Council, Frank Carbone and representatives Douglas Clark and Pat Chalmers from Smithfield RSL attended the school to collect our sample of soil.

Sydney Writers' Festival

Last Thursday was a great day! We went to Cabramatta Library, where we got to meet famous Australian children's authors.

First up, we met David Astle. He got us to make up words and create a definition. My word was ‘bloodies' which meant bleeding bodies. After recess, we heard from Lisa Nichol, who told us the seven rules of becoming a writer. My favourite rule was believe in yourself and inspiration comes from everywhere.

After lunch, Ursula Dubosarsky talked about how hard writing could be. She got us to write a segment of her book. The title of my story was ‘The Strange Adventures of Hannah Brown'. It was so much fun! After that, Karen Foxlee came to talk. She said that role play could help with thinking of ideas for writing. She got many of us to act as different characters. I had to be one of the monsters. Then we met Frank Carbone, the mayor of Fairfield.

It was an awesome day and I'm so glad I was chosen to go.

Fairfield West Public School provides many opportunities for students to share their interests and abilities with the school community. During week 10 term 3, students in the junior and senior choirs performed several songs then individual students danced or sang to entertain students and staff. Gardening Storytime

Last Thursday after school, Ms De Horta together with the awesome Mr Carr hosted 'Plant a Seed & Read Story Time'. Over 150 children and adults attended this exciting event, where everyone had the opportunity to learn about the different types of soils and how worm farms work. Students then got busy gardening as they transferred a plant cutting into their beautifully decorated pots. Ten lucky participants won cool prizes and everyone enjoyed afternoon tea. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers, library monitors, teachers and staff for their contribution in making this event such a success.

National Science Week

Science Fun Session 2017

Students at Fairfield West Public School celebrated National Science Week and took part in a Science Fun Session. All students participated in engaging and hands-on activities which included fireworks in a jar, mini volcanoes and hovercrafts. The students were able to explore their scientific curiosities through various experiments provided by our staff.

Throughout this week, I have had the pleasure of announcing the winners of our Book Week competition. Every child in the school completed an ‘Escape to Everywhere' themed maze, in order to enter. From Wednesday 26^th July to Tuesday 19^th September or while stock lasts, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Earn & Learn Stickers can be dropped into the Collection Box outside the front office or at your local Woolworths, which is located at Fairfield Heights.

At the end of the promotion, we'll be able to get some great new equipment. Community Grant

Mr Carr has been busily working around the school with students in beautifying our school gardens and teaching the students about organic gardening and environmental sustainability. Through Mr Carr's efforts, Fairfield West Public School was successful in obtaining a grant of $1000 through a community grants program which was endorsed by Stocklands Wetherill Park.

On Wednesday 19 July, our school captains along with Mrs Tonucci attended a ceremony to celebrate the school's success and to receive a cheque on behalf of the school. This money will go towards more gardening initiatives around the school including the purchase of gardening resources. Thank you to Stocklands, Mr Carr and all the students who have participated in the Gardening Program throughout the year.

Stage 1 at the Riverside Theatre

On Wednesday 28 June, Stage 1 and some students from the Support Unit went on an excursion to the Riverside Theatre to watch ‘Erth's Prehistoric Aquarium'. The show was about prehistoric marine dinosaurs. It was very exciting as for many of the students it was their first time attending the theatre. The show had lots of interactive puppets and cool glow in the dark objects students could hold during the show. Students and teachers enjoyed the show and it was a great way to end the term.

Refugee Week

At Fairfield West Public School we celebrate diversity and welcome refugees every day. Our NAP (New Arrival Program) class is an English withdrawal program specifically designed to support newly arrived refugee students and encourages communication through speaking, listening, reading and writing. Safety and trust is integrated in all aspects of schooling for successful settlement and learning.

To celebrate Refugee Week at our school, we created a video to showcase our numerous talents, learning experiences and hard work. We were involved in an art project titled 'creating happy memories' and this was achieved using paint, water colours and play dough to express our emotions in a creative way.

Premier's Reading Challenge Update

Many of our students at FWPS are participating in the 2017 NSW Premier's Reading Challenge, which aims to encourage a love of reading quality literature for enjoyment and leisure. The challenge runs from 6 March to 25 August this year and requires participants to read a set number of books, depending on their grade. So far, 13 amazing students from years 3 to 6 have already completed the challenge, which is a fantastic effort considering that they finished the challenge 2 months early! Congratulations to all those wonderful students who have successfully completed PRC and to all those students who are still working on the challenge....happy reading! Assyrian Story Time

Last Thursday after school, Mrs De Horta was delighted to host Fairfield West Public School's very first Assyrian Story Time for children and their parents/caregivers in the hall. Our community language teacher Ms Kina, did an excellent job of reading The Very Itchy Bear in Assyrian and inspiring students to work collaboratively with their parent to create their very own ‘Itchy Bear' masterpieces. It was truly wonderful to see so many children and parents sharing their love of reading in their native language and joining in on the fun. Lastly, thank you to all the staff, library monitors and volunteers for their contribution in making this event a success.

Parent Meetings

On Monday 29 May, our third parent workshop was held in the Community Cottage. This workshop presented information about technology (IPADS). Parents and caregivers were informed of the useful and educational apps which can help them support their child's education at home. The demonstration of simple settings, such as changing the language on the iPad, setting a password and installing the apps were shown. The workshop was very successful as parents took home with them valuable information. The next workshop will be on Monday 26 June and it will be about Cultural Diversity. We would love to see you there.

TEN Information Session

TEN INFORMATION SESSION

Twenty two families were at the TEN information session. They were learning about how to improve numeracy skills. Parents and caregivers were given information about the Targeted Early Numeracy program and what activities they could do at home with their children to support this learning at school.

Families were taught how to play dice games, domino games and card games. Everyone had a great time practising these games together.

A big thank you to the teachers and families who attended to support the Fairfield West community.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Yesterday, over 300 students participated in National Simultaneous Story Time, a campaign which aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. K-2 and some support unit classes read the very entertaining children's picture book called ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon'. Twelve lucky students won their very own copy of this magnificent picture book which is based on the children's nursery rhyme ‘Hey Diddle Diddle'. Congratulations to our prize recipients and a special thank you to all those amazing teachers who supported this wonderful event.

Dance Company

Congratulations to the students involved in Dance Company as they have been selected to represent our school at this years Ultimo Dance Festival. Students from years 3-6 will be performing on 16 of June at the Seymour Centre alongside many other schools from the Ultimo region. The dance they will be performing was inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's abstract art Several Circles, 1926.

K-2 students at Fairfield West Public School had an amazing morning at the Easter Hat Parade. Each student had the opportunity to showcase their Easter hat to their peers and parents. We even had a special visitor, the Easter Bunny! The Easter Bunny presented two prizes to each class and left a big surprise in our classrooms.

Sydney Colonial Walking Tour Stage 2

What an eventful day Stage 2 had on the Sydney Colonial Walking Tour.

Students were assigned characters and participated in role plays with people from the past such as, Mary Reibey and Pemulwuy. Students learnt about life before British contact and what living conditions were like for convicts and free settlers. The students were able to journey back in time to bring our history lessons to life. It was a fabulous learning experience for all.

Last Thursday after school, Ms De Horta was delighted to host the first FWPS Story Time for 2017. Over 120 children and adults listened to our teacher librarian read the hilariously funny children's picture book ‘Pandamonia'. Students then had the opportunity to create their very own pandas together with their parents/caregivers. Ten lucky participants won awesome prizes and everyone enjoyed afternoon tea. Thank you to our wonderful library volunteers, library monitors, teachers and staff for their contribution in making this event such a success.

Halogen Young Leaders Day

Our favourite motivation speaker of the day – Doctor Jordan Nguyen!

On Friday March 3, the school leaders attended the Halogen Conference. We had an early start to the day as we arrived at school at 7am. We were split up into 2 cars with Mr Prasad and Ms Taing. It was a wet and rainy drive to the City. When we were driving on the M4, we went past 3 car accidents which had caused some traffic congestions. It took approximately 1.5 hours to get there.

Once we arrived, we found our seats, settled in and enjoyed watching the hosts Gemma Knight and Scott Tweedie. They were entertaining and introduced us to inspiring leaders who have show acts of leadership.

As we listened to these amazing people explain what they had accomplished, we sat there and took notes and completed activities in these booklets they provided us with. There were 5 speakers talking but our personal favourite was Dr. Jordan Nguyen. He was funny, entertaining and had helped a lot people with a disability called Cerebral Palsy. We even got a photo with him!

Our favourite part of the day was when Scott dressed up as a turkey and Gemma played the saxophone!

Before we left to go on our long journey home, we accidentally left Adam F in the bathroom whilst we were in the elevator. Luckily we remembered and we were united again!

After we were split up, we grabbed McDonald's before we left. There was so much traffic and we didn't get back to school till 5pm. Overall, it was an amazing day and we were inspired. We are ready to be the best leaders possible for 2017!

Student Representative Council at FWPS

The Fairfield West Student Representative Council (SRC) is formed at the beginning of each school year. Every class is represented by two students who are nominated and voted for by their peers. These representatives are sworn in at an official induction ceremony. In 2017, they will continue to meet on a fortnightly basis to discuss student concerns and participate in making this school an even more caring and productive place of learning. Last Friday, these representatives took their pledge and were officially inducted into their role for 2017. The Fairfield West Community is looking forward to working with these wonderful students throughout the year.

Buttons Movie

Over the last two years, Film Club students, Miss Obeid, Ms Mandow and Mrs De Horta have been busy shooting their claymation (an animation using characters made from clay) ‘Buttons'. This film is about an adventurous dog called Milo who gets into a bit of trouble when he decides to sniff around a set of red buttons that appear out of nowhere. Part one was filmed in 2015, whislt the second part was filmed in 2016. Students were involved in all aspects of filming and editing.

In term 4 2016, Film Club students had the wonderful opportunity to attend a film festival held at Cabramatta Public School which screened our very own claymation, as it had been selected as a finalist in the film competition they were running. There, we watched many awesome short films made by students from other schools across Australia and even from the U.S.A. Our film received the ‘Outstanding Claymation' award, so congratulations to all those students who worked tirelessly on this film and a special thanks to the wonderful teachers who mentored students throughout the whole process. Thank you to Ms Goldfinch, Mr Rangiah and Ms Funnell for their support and encouragement.

Russ the Story Bus

Russ the Story Bus Visit

Last week Russ the Story Bus came to visit our school, together with the acclaimed author Tony Wilson who wrote the award winning children's book ‘The Cow Tripped over the Moon'. Year 3 students had the privilege of listening to this very talented author speak about how he writes such creative and inspiring stories for children. Afterwards, students got to hop on the coolest library on wheels, where they had the opportunity to choose one book to keep from a selection of hundreds of brand new children's novels and picture books. Once students selected a book they liked, they had the chance to chill out and read their book at the back of the bus or on brightly coloured bean bags outside. Russ the Story Bus is a wonderful initiative of the Sydney Writers' Festival designed to share the magic of books and promote literacy to children in western Sydney. To all those lucky year 3 students, happy reading!

Thursday was really fun at the Sydney Writer's Festival. First we got on the bus and students from Bonnyrigg Public School came with us too. When we reached Cabramatta library, Jacqueline Harvey spoke with us. She was very funny and entertaining. She talked about her life and told us that she was a big worrier when she was little. Congratulations to all the students, parents and staff of FWPS! We have won the 2016 Fairfield City Council Garden Competition (schools' category.) Over the years, with the encouragement and support of our school leadership team, our gardens have grown, diversified and flourished. The use of recycled materials, in combination with a variety of natives, succulents, vegetables and herbs has seen areas transformed into interesting and vibrant spaces where students, parents, teachers and even animals like to spend their time.

Our partner Mr Dawe has been able to share his expertise and supply us with loads of amazing plants. Mr Carr works tirelessly watering, planting and building. Mr Gary and Mr Josh have also dedicated their time and skills to maintaining these spaces. Many children have been a part of creating these delightful spaces under the watchful eyes of their green-thumbed teachers. Thank you students for your commitment and enthusiasm.

State Spelling Bee Competition

State Spelling Bee

Jessica Nguyen of 5/6C was one of 43 contestants competing in the Senior State Final of the Premier's Spelling Bee 2016. The competition was held at Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Centre, Ultimo from 2-6pm. Jessica made it to round 5 of the competition, which marked the start of the 'unseen' word category.

In 2016, over 136 000 students from 940 schools participated in the Spelling Bee at a school level. Over 3500 students progressed to regional finals. Jessica did extremely well to make it to this level of a State competition and we are proud of her efforts.

A big thank you to Ms Fairs who has been organising the Spelling Bee and training the students.

Yarning Time

‘Yarning Time' Aboriginal In- School Activity

Last Thursday 10 November we held our Aboriginal In- School Activity called ‘Yarning Time' in the school hall. The students came in their grades for one hour at a time to participate in learning what a yarning circle is within Aboriginal culture. Within this circle they listened to and watched a contemporary Aboriginal story and learned about and discussed the meaning of some of the symbols used in the story. They then went into smaller class circles and created their own stories on the boomerangs provided. The students were then given the opportunity to share their story with a buddy in their class before coming back together in one large circle where a few of the students were willing to share their stories with the whole group. We were fortunate enough to also have Carol Brown, our local DET Aboriginal Liaison Community and Kathy Holz who is our school Aboriginal Liaison Officer. It was a fun filled and also a very informative time enjoyed by both students and staff.

SRC in 2016

The 2016 Student Representative Council (SRC) have had an amazing year filled with lots of fantastic events and fundraisers including the Book Exchange Stall, Jelly Baby Fundraiser, Playground Borrowing, Canteen Monitors and the Halogen National Young Leaders Day (attended by the school captains and councillors).

This term, the SRC have been actively engaged in the Nutrition Ninjas initiative developed last year.

We have had conversations about healthy eating and collaboratively created a survey for all the students across the school to fill out. As the SRC, we have been trying our best to encourage our peers to eat a healthy breakfast at home or at breakfast club which is open every morning from 8:30am.

As a team, we have taken photos of lots of students around the school during recess and lunch to see all the healthy and delicious foods they are eating. Here are some photos we have taken. Check out the healthy foods.

Scrabble Tournament

Six students from Fairfield West Public School had the wonderful opportunity to compete against Cabramatta and Croydon Public School in a Scrabble Tournament, held at Cabramatta Public School. Students were required to play three very intense 45 minute games which challenged their numeracy and literacy skills, whilst developing their strategic thinking and decision making skills in a fun and engaging way. Croydon Public School was the overall winner on the day. Ms De Horta and the scrabble team would like to thank Ms Goldfinch for her ongoing support and mentoring in the competition.

Grandparents Day Morning Tea

On Friday 28 October, the Grandparents of students at Fairfield West Public School were invited to the hall to celebrate annual Grandparents Day that fell on Sunday 30 October. The event took place from 11.30-1.00pm. There were lucky door prizes, a photo booth, fun activities and plenty of food and drink. It was the 5^th year that FWPS recognised our children's grandparents and it has become one of the most significant events on our school calendar.

Gardening Projects at Fairfield West Public School

Our school has amazing gardens. Many teachers and students across the school have been working on wonderful and inspiring outdoor projects. This year we have entered the Fairfield City Council Garden Competition for schools. A representative from the council has recently visited our school and enjoyed looking at all the different spaces.

It is great to participate in such competitions to showcase different ways our amazing students contribute to school life at Fairfield West Public School.

Maths Fun Day

Students at Fairfield West Public School explored mathematics in a fun and engaging way on Maths Fun Day. Students started the day off with their own teachers and visited two other teachers during the day. They participated in the Amazing Race, answering questions and getting their passports stamped. At the end of the day students congratulated peers who won prizes at a whole school assembly.

Spanish Story Time

Last Thursday after school, Ms De Horta was delighted to host Spanish Story Time for children and their parents/caregivers in the library. Ms Kleeman did an outstanding job of reading 'The Fearsome, Frightening, Ferocious Box' in Spanish and English. This award winning children's picture book is about a mysterious box which appears with something inside it, which causes much fear in the animals who want to open it. Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed it! Afterwards, students and their siblings had the opportunity to work collaboratively with their parent on an art activity related to the story. Four children won amazing lucky door prizes and everyone enjoyed having afternoon tea together. Thank you to Ms Kleeman for sharing her love of reading in Spanish and to our lovely parent volunteers Mrs Megan Lih and Mrs Susanna Lie for their contribution in making this event a success.

Science Fun Day

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of Science and Technology. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in. To celebrate National Science Week, all of the students at Fairfield West Public School have taken part in Science Fun Day. All students have had the opportunity to participate in engaging, hands-on activities which include creating lava lamps, making sherbet, volcanos and parachutes. Students' curious behaviours were unleashed as they explored and investigated the scientist inside them.

Debating News

Congratulations to the FWPS Wranglers debating team who last week went through to the next stage of the Premiers Debating Challenge. This round's topic was whether animals should be banned from all sports and we were given the affirmative position.

All team members did a great job in deriving a definition, establishing a team line and developing their argument. However what got us over the line was our ability to think on our feet and deliver a sound rebuttal.

Thank you to Ringrose Public School who were great competition and we look forward to meeting them again next season.

24 students from years 2-4 and 14 students from years 5-6 competed in Fairfield West's Spelling Bee on Monday, 15 August. The words used in the competition came from Macquarie Dictionary and covered a range of topics, including: General, Arts & Entertainment, Civics & Politics, Food Safari, Maths & Science, Sport and The Natural World.

Khang Nguyen (4E) and Ali-Moana Tui (4W) were the winners of the Junior competition, and Tiffany Lu (5/6C) and Jessica Nguyen (5/6C) were the Senior competition winners. These students will compete in the regional final at Shelley Public School on Wednesday, 21 September. Congratulations and good luck to these top spellers!

Arabic Story Time

Last Thursday after school, Mrs De Horta was pleased to host Arabic Story Time for children and their parents/caregivers in the library. Mrs Dona did a brilliant job of reading ‘Window' in Arabic and English. Then, students worked collaboratively with their parents and siblings to create their very own collage windows. Thank you to Ms Goldfinch, Ms Funnell, Mr Rangiah and our community languages teachers for their support. Also, a special thank you to our lovely parent volunteers for their assistance with setting up afternoon tea.

Stage 3 Camp

Students who attended The Great Aussie Bush Camp at Kincumber were involved in a variety of activities to build their confidence and ability to work as part of a team. These students participated in rock climbing, abseiling, raft building, orienteering, frisbee golf, canoeing and cooking damper. Student behaviour was excellent as usual, and both staff and students found the camp a rewarding experience.

Vietnamese Story Time

Last Thursday after school, Mrs De Horta was thrilled to co-host Vietnamese Story Time together with our talented Community Languages teacher Ms Lai for Vietnamese speaking children and their parents/caregivers in the library. Mrs Lai did an excellent job of reading ‘Buri and the Marrow' in Vietnamese and inspiring students to work collaboratively with their caregivers and siblings to create a magnificent artwork depicting a marrow (also known as a large zucchini). Two luck students won amazing lucky door prizes and everyone enjoyed having afternoon tea together. Thank you to Ms Lai for sharing her love of reading in Vietnamese and to our lovely parent volunteer Mrs Megan Lih for her contribution in making this event a success.

Last Thursday after school, approximately 70 people attended Story Time with Dad hosted by Mrs De Horta and Mr Mah Chut in the library. Mr Mah Chut, an amazing FWPS teacher who also happens to be a very cool dad himself, read ‘My Dad' and ‘Some Dads…' to a very excited group of children. Students later made their dads/caregivers a lolly jar filled with yummy lollies and four lucky participants won awesome prizes. It was truly wonderful to see so many mums, dads, uncles, grandparents and even older brothers and sisters join in on the fun. A big thank you Mr Mah Chut for sharing his love of reading and to our library assistant Ms Wells and parent volunteer Mrs Megan Lih for their contribution in making this event a success.

Our Story is about the importance of the struggle for reconciliation in Australian history and identity. It recounts the 'trauma and triumph told by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples'.

Debating at Fairfield West Public School

Fairfield West Public School has once again entered two teams into the Premier's Debating Challenge.

Congratulations to all of the students who tried out for the teams the "Pow Wows" and the "Wranglers". It was great to see so many students take an interest in the cerebral battle that is debating.

The teams have been having two training sessions a week. On Mondays at lunch we practice our debating technique. This involves acquiring the skills to expertly work as a team, develop a sound argument, elaborate that argument and provide real life examples to back it up. Students also learn to think on their feet by preparing speedy rebuttals to counter any arguments an opposition may present.

Our second session is held on a Thursday. Here students brainstorm real life ideas, building up a bank of knowledge on issues such as education, politics, science, art, popular culture, and ethics. They think "outside the square" and develop their opinion whilst seeking to further their understanding of their world. It's also a great chance for us to expand our vocabulary and etymology.

So far we have participated in one debate against Homebush West. Both teams had victories on this day and as teachers we could not have been happier, not just with the result, but with the way all the students competed fairly, courteously, and sought out feedback on what and where they can improve their debating nouse.

Mother's Day Breakfast

Mother's day breakfast was a big success with a record number of mums, grandmothers, aunts and some dads. Some of the delicious breakfast included eggs on toast, fruit, croissants, cakes and drinks. Families had the opportunity to take a photo with their child at the creative photo booth. The morning was enjoyable and memorable.

National Simultaneous Story Time

Over 300 students participated in National Simultaneous Story Time, a campaign which aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. K-2 and some support unit classes read the very entertaining children's picture book called ‘I Got This Hat' and had the opportunity to create their very own pirate hats which they wore to this event. Students also got to see hilarious photos of their teachers, including Ms Goldfinch wearing a range of funny hates too. Eight lucky students won a lucky door prize and will be receiving their very own copy of ‘I Got This Hat' soon. Congratulations to our prize recipients and a special thank you to all those amazing teachers who supported this wonderful event.

Clubs at Fairfield West Public School

As part of our school vision in offering extra-curricular opportunities to our students, we are pleased to have commenced our Clubs program. It is exciting to see so many different learning experiences with social, academic, creative and collaborative areas covered. There are engineering and science classes, jazz and hip hop dancing, fitness and drama groups, sketching and gardening classes, scrabble and board games to name a few. Students have voted to participate in their selected clubs and will attend with a mix of students from across the school. We look forward to sharing with you some of their journeys through the school website and newsletters.

Fairfield West Public School Cross Country Carnival

On Tuesday 3 May, FWPS held our annual Cross Country Carnival. It was pleasing to see the perfect weather conditions as we were greeted by the sun. K – 2 remained at school and held their carnival on the back oval whilst 3 – 6 walked to Avery Park, Fairfield West. It was great to see the students take part and give it their best in particular, our kindergarten students, as this was their first carnival! All our infants' students who placed in the top four received their ribbon on the day. They even had their own podium to stand on! In our primary event, we had one student break a record that had been held since 2011. Congratulations to Pharrell Ibini-Isei who broke the 8 year boys record, running the course in 9 minutes and 43 seconds. Every second counts as he beat the old record by 2 seconds! All the students are to be commended on their behaviour. It was so nice to see how supportive they were of one another and how they cheered for their House groups. Students who placed in the top six in the primary cross country will be competing at the Horsley Zone Cross Country Carnival on Friday 27 May which will be held at Brenan Park, Smithfield. We wish all those students the very best. As usual, students were excited to see who would win the Overall Champions Cup and Spirit Cup. Unfortunately Freeman could not hold their reign this year with Sauvage winning both the Overall Champions and Spirit Cup. Congratulations Sauvage, a well deserved win! Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who attended the carnivals and supported the students as well as all the teachers who were present and undertook jobs to ensure a smooth running of the day.

On Tuesday 16 February, Fairfield West Public School held their annual swimming carnival at Prairiewood Leisure Centre along with Harrington St and St Johns Park Public School. We were greeted with beautiful sunny skies and warm weather which made jumping into the pool easier.

This year 37 students from Fairfield West Public School attended. Students were excited and ready to earn points for their House Group and to claim victory over the two trophies – The Overall Champion Cup and the Spirit Cup.

The day ran very smoothly and the students displayed excellent behaviour and were supportive of one another whilst competing. Every child who entered the water tried their best.

Last Thursday 24 March, after school, over 40 children, parents and caregivers attended our very first Aboriginal Story Time hosted by Mrs De Horta in the library. To start off, they enjoyed learning about and playing an Aboriginal game called ‘Googala' thanks to our amazing teachers Ms Welsh and Ms Fairs. Then everyone listened to Ms Cathy Holz read the beautiful story ‘Malu Kangaroo' which later inspired students to create their very own Aboriginal art work with the help of Mrs Shirley Goff. Four lucky participants won awesome prizes and everyone enjoyed afternoon tea.

Last Thursday after school, Mrs De Horta was delighted to host FWPS English Story Time in the hall. Over 90 children and adults listened to our teacher librarian read one of her favourite children's picture book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit'. Students then had the opportunity to create their very own crayons together with their parents/caregivers. Six lucky participants won awesome prizes and everyone enjoyed afternoon tea. Aboriginal Story Time will be held Thursday the 24 March at 3:15pm in the library. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Reading Workshops for Parents

Parents of K-2 and 3-6 students attended two separate interactive reading workshops designed to assist them with facilitating an effective reading session with their child at home.

Parents received resource packs which included strategies for prompting students to independently problem solve as they read, visuals to assist students with retelling a story and methods for questioning students to check for comprehension as well as to help students make connections to their own experiences, other texts and the world they live in.

A list of useful websites and apps was also included, as well as additional tips for building reading skills through incidental daily activities at home.

It was wonderful to see so many parents interested in expanding their knowledge in order to help their children achieve the rewarding skill of ‘reading'!

Did you know that there are a number of class websites from our school sharing their learning? Students at Fairfield West Public School have been showcasing and publishing their work online to share with others. Have a look and browse through.

Here is a class website that received national recognition and was even published in an educators magazine.

Cardboard Challenge with over 450 students

On Tuesday 24 November, 109 Fairfield West Students embarked on a journey to meet other creators to design, build and invent using cardboard only. Students from 5/6C, 6H, 3/4VP and 4A participated in a Cardboard Challenge event at McCallums Hill Public School with over 450 students from many other schools.

Students from Scarborough PS, McCallums Hill PS, Lakemba PS, Otford PS, Victoria Avenue PS, Belmore South PS and East Lakes PS also attended. The atmosphere was filled with creativity, collaboration, networking and excitement. Fun was had by all.

Students all engaged in a creative session on the day to build creations out of cardboard, inspired by Caine's Arcade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U. The students have been involved in problem solving, designing and building inspired by the professional learning engaged by staff looking at how to develop and build 21st Century learners. They were supported on the day by volunteer education students from the University of Sydney.

This excursion incorporates learning across Science, Mathematics and Technology.

Our staff also engaged in professional learning from Dr Jane Hunter who is a

Arabic Story time

Thursday 26 November after school, Ms De Horta was pleased to host Fairfield West Public School's very first Arabic Story Time for children and their parents/caregivers in the library.

Ms Dona did a brilliant job of reading ‘The Very Hungary Caterpillar' in Arabic. Then, students worked collaboratively with their parents and siblings to create their very own beautiful butterflies.

Four lucky people also won cool prizes.

Thursday 5 November after school, Mrs De Horta was thrilled to host Fairfield West Public School's very first Vietnamese Story Time for children and their parents/caregivers in the library.

Mrs Lai did an excellent job of reading ‘Fluffy Mouse is Sick' in Vietnamese and inspiring students to work collaboratively with their parents, aunties and siblings to create their very own mouse masks.

Outdoor Learning Environment Art Exhibition

Throughout the year, 3/4VP have been working on designing and creating an inviting Outdoor Learning Environment.

On Thursday 12 November, we celebrated the creative achievements of the students in 1P, 2E, 3/4VP and 5/6C in this colourful space.

Students enjoyed a picnic breakfast with their family and friends surrounded by interesting sculptures, paintings and drawings. Parents, students and teachers were able to enjoy a lovely morning of culture and conversation. It certainly was a dynamic way to start the day.

Students displayed a wide range of artworks including colourful paintings, innovative three-dimensional sculptures, creative clay figurines and outstanding garden installments.

The students and teachers were very proud of their efforts, receiving great feedback from community members. The parents and caregivers also enjoyed creating their own artworks on the day. A very successful event!

Opportunity to Perform Concert at Smithfield RSL

Students, families and staff gathered Thursday 5 November at Smitfield RSL from both Smithfield Public School and Fairfield West Public School in an Opportunity to Perform concert.

The talent was spectacular with both schools showcasing their singing and dance groups of all ages. The evening began and ended with the combined choir of students from both schools. It really was a night to remember with proud parents taking many photos of their young stars on stage.

We would like to thank the organisers Mr Rangiah, Mr Post and Ms Christos. Also thank you to our hostess for the evening Ms. Welsh as well as Ms Mandow, Ms Rouel, Ms Taing, Ms Audisoh, Ms Carmen, Mr Carr, Ms Joffrin and Ms Petrovska for your involvement in the Opportunity to Perform combined concert.

Russ the Story Bus visit

On Friday Russ the Story Bus came to visit our school. Year 5 students had the privilege of hopping on board with a favourite old book of theirs and swapping it for a brand new one. A team of awesome volunteers assisted our students choose a book from the many hundreds of picture and chapter books available.

Once students selected a book they liked, they had the chance to chill out and read their book at the back of the bus. Russ the Story Bus is a wonderful initiative of the Sydney Writers' Festival designed to share the magic of books and promote literacy to children in western Sydney. To all those lucky year 5 students, happy reading!

Kindy Orientation at Fairfield West Public School

The 2016 Kindergarten students have been attending our Kindy Orientation Program over the last two weeks.

The children have participated in a variety of fun and educational activities. Teachers have exposed them to quality texts and have provided suitable and relevant art activities to complete. The kindy quad was buzzing with excitement last Monday with the children being engaged in some fun outdoor games.

The Department of Education provided a dvd with some footage of children experiencing their first day at school. Our future students viewed this and are super keen to start next year.

Kindy Orientation will continue for two more Mondays, November 16 and 23.

FWPS hosts English story time

Last Thursday after school, Mrs De Horta was delighted to host FWPS English Story Time in the hall. To start off, two librarians from Fairfield City Libraries showcased new services and resources available to the community and provided each child who attended with a free library bag.

After that, our teacher librarian read ‘Too Many Elephants in This House' and inspired students to create their very own elephants together with their parents/caregivers.

Ten lucky participants won awesome prizes and everyone enjoyed afternoon tea. Vietnamese Story Time will be held this Thursday at 3:15pm in the library. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Fairfield West Public School honours our Grandparents

Friday 30 October following our Superheroes disco the night before, we had our everyday superheroes morning tea for Grandparents.

There were light refreshments provided. It was a memorable morning where grandchildren came down to the hall with their grandparents to take photos and laminate artworks where they wrote why they were special in their lives and how they are dearly loved. The room was aglow with love, honour and respect.

An overwhelming turn out and so we would like to thank our elders in the community for taking time out to share with us morning tea. You are indeed our everyday superheroes!

Superhero disco at FWPS

On Thursday 29 October, Fairfield West Public School held their first Superhero disco!

Students came as their favourite character and enjoyed a night of dancing, face painting, photo taking and fun.

Friday 8 April saw over 150 people get up early to come and celebrate our mothers. Staff were there at 6 am working to make breakfast and gifts to give.

It was a hugely successful event in which we celebrate our mums here, afar and past.

Bring Your Own Device Parent Seminars

On Thursday 30 April, Fairfield West Public School held two BYOD 'Bring Your Own Device' Parent seminars which had over 50 parents attend in an initiative that our school will look to start this year. Selected classes will soon have the option for students to bring their own electronic devices to use in the classroom to further support the engaging and exciting learning environment that already exists.

Well done to all the students who recently tried out for the debating team and congratulations to those students who have been selected.

On Tuesday, 3 March the team, together with Mrs Truong and Mr Mah Chut attended a debating workshop at Greenway Park Public School. The morning was filled with lessons and tips on debating structure which emphasised the importance of having a good MANNER (how we present ourselves, make eye contact and how loudly we speak), METHOD (how we plan our speech), and MATTER (what argument is in our speech).

The students proved to be exemplars of our three school rules of being safe, being respectful and being good learners.

Toney Davey who ran it was excellent and students responded to him very well.

Debating is beneficial for the students on many levels. It builds confidence and teaches children how to accept and give constructive criticism. In addition to this talking and listening skills are strengthened, vocabulary is increased, teamwork and decision making abilities are tested and students improve in their ability to use logic and rational thinking.

Fairfield West Honour the Fallen

A commemorative ANZAC day ceremony was held last Friday for our School community.

The school choir (comprising students and staff), performed two very moving items and our Captains/Vice-Captains conducted a truly wonderful assembly.

Year 6 students solemnly delivered three readings whilst the remainder of the school respectfully reflected on the hardships endured by many soldiers past and present to afford us the possibility to live in peace.

Thank you to the parents who attended and those who generously donated flowers to mark this proud occasion.

Colours for Autism - FWPS celebrate diversity

The month of April is Autism Awareness month, this year the theme is Colours for Autism. This is a time where our school community acknowledge the differences between each other and learn more about those on the autistic spectrum.

Students showed their growing awareness and acceptance of autism on Thursday 2 April 2015, by all wearing multi coloured clothes to school. All classes decorated their rooms with multi coloured balloons and were involved in activities to increase their understanding of autism.

A great day was had by all.

SOLE at Fairfield West Public School goes to Regional Conference

This year we were proud to announce that our school was selected to present at the 2 day Regional Conference for Inspire Innovate.

Inspire Innovate was held at the ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush, Sydney for the Inspire Innovate: Leading Innovation and Change Conference Series. This two day conference embraced the theme of "Leading Curriculum Change" and delivering an outstanding professional development opportunity for educators, by educators, to enhance pedagogy and quality curriculum implementation K-12 and enrich the capacity of principals and aspiring leaders to lead innovation and change in their schools.

There were over 570 delegates that attended. Our school showcased how SOLE - Self Organised Learning Environments and PBL - Project Based Learning was being effectively embedded into our school. This saw students building reading nooks, developing environmentally clean strategies and working with the community.

What do our students think about SOLE and PBL?

The feedback was positive with more schools wanting to visit here and see the great and inspired learning happening right here at Fairfield West Public School.

FWPS School Leaders attend National Young Leaders Day

On Monday 23 March, our school leaders, SRC and House captains attended the National Young Leaders Day with over 6,000 students from all over New South Wales.

The Halogen National Young Leaders Day is an annual event founded in 1997 to develop strong leadership values amongst young Australians. The Program consists of keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive learning that seeks a range of specific outcomes for young people who aspire to lead themselves and others well.

90th Celebration at Fairfield West Public School

2015 marks a very special year for Fairfield West Public School as we celebrate 90 years of education.

Our staff are busy and excited to be part of this celebration with several teams working on projects and events to mark this event.

At the top of this page on the right, you will note a new tab - '90th Celebration'. Here we will update with ideas and dates of events happening in honour of our 90th year celebration.

At the year 6 assembly, each student in our school was gifted with a drink bottle to mark this special year.

Aboriginal performance at Fairfield West Public School

On November 5 2014 Fairfield West Public School enjoyed a wonderful performance called ‘Kadu' by Aboriginal performers Ryka Ali, Aunty Cindy (Ryka's grandmother) and Ryka's sister. The performance demonstrated the richness, of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands cultures and included participatory dances with the students and staff. The performers also explained various instruments, artefacts and costumes specific to the Islands. Students were very engaged and many went up on the stage to participate in dancing. We had an amazing demonstration by Ryka of the extraordinary versatility of the didgeridoo. A fun and educational time was had by all.

Premier's Spelling Bee State Finalist for FWPS

We are very proud of Jessica Nguyen who represented Fairfield West Public School at the Premier's Spelling Bee State championship held at the ABC Studios in Ultimo. She attended with her supportive mum, aunty and Ms Edworthy who cheered her on all the way. Well done Jessica.

Silence for Remembrance Day at FWPS

Remembrance day is the day which commemorates the end of World War 1. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the Armistice was signed. (Armistice means to stop arms - to cease hostilities).

We remember and honour all who fought, died and suffered fighting in World War 1 and in subsequent wars and conflicts.

Fairfield West Public School had a one minute of silence to commemorate this day at 11am.

This is a magazine distributed to all principals, educators and network administrators. A three page article on Miss Pulbrook and her class 5/6P interviewed on their SOLE (Self Organised Learning Environment) experience.

Fairfield West Public school SOLE Math project is an inquiry based learning initiative in which students are pitched a question. They then research and find possible solutions to put into action in a Math context. It is highly engaging and encourages 21^st Century problem solving and creativity.

Fairfield West Public School celebrates National Science Week

National Science Week (16-24 August) is an annual celebration of science in Australia and an opportunity to join together to enjoy and explore the wonderful world of science. On Thursday 21 August, students from Kindergarten through to Year Six rotated amongst teachers within their grade and participated in various science experiments. The teachers provided a wide variety of science experiments for the students to engage in. Some of these experiments included;

making slime
making sherbert
designing parachutes
investigating static electricity
making butter
creating sound through fishing lines
investigating carbon dioxide
investigating water and its properties
designing and making paper planes
designing balloon rockets
investigating the colour spectrum
investigating properties of washing detergent and its impact on the environment

National Reconciliation Week 27 May- 3 June 2014

National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. The week-long celebration is a great opportunity for all Australians to explore ways to join the national reconciliation effort. At Fairfield West Public School, we did this by each class designing and making a poster to share and represent their understanding of what reconciliation means. This also involved some excellent discussions and sharing of ideas within the classroom. These posters were then displayed around the school through the week and some classrooms were decorated in black, yellow and red colours using streamers and balloons. It was a very significant week. Below are just a few of the wonderful posters.

Boomerang Painting Workshop at FWPS

Fairfield West Public School had an exciting time when ‘An Indigenous Experience' team visited our school and conducted workshops designed to help students learn about and respect Aboriginal culture. Every student who participated was able to paint their own boomerang in Aboriginal colours and symbols. It was a wonderful memento of a significant experience that each student could take away with them.

AR Technology in class like Harry Potter newspapers!

Have you ever seen Harry Potter and the photos on the newspaper look like it is moving? That is called Augmented Reality, which is putting layers of video and animation to pictures around us. Sounds like something from the future but in fact students in 5I with teacher Miss Isaac have made it happen!

Last term the students of 5I studied the Rainforest and together decided to use their Technology time to build an AR on the Rainforest. They invited Ms Goldfinch and surprised her with a wall that when scanned with an iPad, came alive with their videos explaining about what they had learned. Using the free app Aurasma they are bringing to life their learning! Ms Goldfinch was so impressed. 5I will be creating one for the office so you can check it out. We will post when it is ready to be viewed.

New iPad Learning Space

Our school now has a new iPad Learning Space along with our Computer Lab. There are 32 brand new iPads for students to use when they arrive in the iPad Learning Space to learn and create with. Ask your children what new and exciting things they have learned to do with the iPads. The colourful seats match the iPad cover sets to make it easier for students to find the iPad they were working on.

5/6P competed in the global competition 'World Education Games' on the 5 and 6 of March. This annual competition aims to get all students excited about learning, and gives the top students in each school the opportunity to see how they measure up against the best around the world.

The students in 5/6P competed in both the spelling & mathematics competition. They were very excited to be participating in this world wide event. The students in 5/6P were extremely engaged and motivated by the fact that they were competing with students all around the world. It was a great chance for them to ultilise their spelling, mathematical and ICT skills. 5/6P thoroughly enjoyed this event and hope to compete next year!

Global Publicity for Great Barrier Reef Project

This year 6H along with Mr Heterick connected and began to collaborate with a school in California. To be specific a Year 5 class from Arroyo Grande. The project was first designed to build a collaborative community around the use of iPads on a Problem based project. Mr Heterick came up with the clever idea of the Pacific Ocean and how this joins our nations. Both schools set out to find out what global issues were affecting our local oceans. 6H set out to research, discover and then present their findings in the form of a short stop motion animation of the issues surrounding our Great Barrier Reef.

Both schools have connected via Edmodo to post ideas and information as well as meeting before and after school to connect using Adobe connect. Here are two articles written about the experience from 'The Tribune' and also 'Saint Maria Times' outlining the virtual meeting between California and us here in Fairfield West.

"This project was engaging and provided students with the opportunity to express themselves in a meaningful way" said Mr Heterick of the project. He is looking forward to continuing this project next year.

Our parents from the Little Learners program joined us to find out about the iPads and learning that goes on in our school. Our iPad tutors who are student volunteers presented to our parents. On Thursday 14 June, Stage 3 students were lucky enough to be visited by GWS player Tim Seagrave (Jersey 46). Tim kindly came to our morning assembly and told us lots of things about his career as an AFL player and we were able to ask questions.

Students who asked questions received a showbag and some students even received a signed team photograph. After the assembly, Tim was inundated with students wanting his autograph. We learnt a lot about Tim and the sport AFL.

Greater Western Sydney Giants donated signed footballs to the school, which will be used in our next fundraiser.

Kindergarten has had a marvellous start to the new school year. Over the next two weeks, Kindergarten students will be individually assessed by the Kindergarten classroom teachers using Best Start Assessment tasks.

We would like to remind parents who are new to our school that we are a 'nut free' school. Please do not send any nuts, peanut butter, nutella or any other nut products to school. This is to ensure that the students who are highly allergic to these substances are protected.

FWPS Leaders for 2011

Our school leaders for 2011 were inducted at a special assembly on Thursday, 17 February 2011. Nitin Moopnar and Noor Shojaiefard are the school captains and James Cluff and Teodora Vukojicic are the vice captains. The councillors for this year are Rebecca Tran, Bobby Jo Thomas, Anthony Zuber, Aaron Yueu, Emanuel Kindaro and Kim Giang.

Homework Help at FWPS

The Homework Help Centre started on Monday, 14 February 2011. The Centre will be running all year from Term 1 through to Term 4 each Monday from 3:15pm to 4:15pm. Students involved in the program receive support from two teachers based at our school. The program is free and requires the parent/caregiver of the student attending to be present for fortnightly innovative parent workshops on the latest issues in education including, interactive whiteboards, computer technology, reading and other specific areas of your child's learning. The program is quite beneficial for those students who may need additional help in completing their homework and also informs parents of various strategies that they can use to support their child's learning at home.

Active After School Program

The Active After-school Communities program is a national initiative that provides primary school children with access to free, sport and other structured physical activity programs in the after-school time slot of 3.15pm to 4.15pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each week Ms Godfrey, Mrs Webb, Mrs Khan and Mrs Macri organise fun activities to help children with their fitness, rather than going home and sitting in front of the TV. Children learn about the benefits of staying active, healthy eating and good sportsmanship, they also receive fruit at the end of the session. Each term different years will have a chance to participate, this term it is Year 3 and Year 4. Places are still available for this term; if you are interested please see Mrs Khan.

Values at Fairfield West

There are 9 core values as set out by the NSW Department of Education : Care, Cooperation, Fairness, Excellence, Participation, Responsibility, Respect, Integrity and Democracy. These values link with our school rules of being safe, being respectful and being good learners.

It is encouraged that these be continually referred to and used as a means of recognising positive behaviour in students and uniting the school as a whole.

The Value of the Month will be introduced at morning whole school assemblies at the beginning of each month.

The Value of the Month is to be discussed, explored and reinforced in classrooms throughout the month.

The Value of the Month will be promoted in the newsletter and on the School Bulletin Board.

Swimming Carnival 2011

On Tuesday 8th February Fairfield West Public School will hold its Annual Swimming Carnival at Prairiewood Leisure Centre. It will be the first time that FWPS will be joining with other local schools, Harrington St Public School and St.John's Park Public School, in holding their Swimming Carnival. In 2010 about 120 students from Years 1 to 5 took part in the Aquatic Survival Challenge through which approximately 50 students were identified as being able to competently swim 50 metres. These students will compete at the carnival in 2011. It will be an exciting time for these students with many of them looking to swim times fast enough to make the Horsley Zone Swimming Carnival.

FWPS goes Maroon for a Day

Recent floods have affected many Australians, but Queenslanders have been particularly hard hit.

The floods damaged more than 90 Queensland public schools. Some may not be able to open for the start of the school year. As well, six TAFE Institutes and more than 80 government child care centres have been flood affected.

On Wednesday 16 February, students at FWPS are encouraged to wear something maroon and bring in a gold coin donation for the flood victims.

Public Speaking

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in ongoing public speaking exercices. This may be in the form of news in K-2 classes and more formal presentations in years 3 to 6. Grade competitions are held during the year to select the school representatives for district competitions. Jennifer Biggins (K), Ana Vukojicic (Y2), Syprus Lakisoe (Y3) and Amy Tran (Y6) represented Fairfield West PS at the Fairfield District competition. Jennifer Biggins is the Kindergarten Fairfield District champion for 2010!

Christmas at FWPS

Fairfield West Public School's annual Christmas donation tree is here again!

We are asking for donations of non-perishable goods eg. pantry food: dried pasta, biscuits, rice, tea, coffee, long life milk, cake mixes, cordial, juices; tinned food: baked beans, spaghetti, carrots, peas, fruits, salmon, tuna, ham, asparagus, corn, beetroot and toys and books.

Donations can be placed under the tree in the office area until Friday, 10 December.

The staff and students want to take this opportunity to wish all parent and caregivers a happy Christmas and all the best for the new year.

Presentation Evening

Our annual Presentation Evening will be held on Wednesday, 8th December at Smithfield RSL. Students will be acknowledge for their sporting and academic efforts. The captains, vice captains and leaders for 2011 will be announced.
