Stories and highlights
There's always something to celebrate at our school! From exciting events to proud moments and everyday wins, here are some of our highlights.
Cross Country
On Friday 8 May, a team of 47 students represented FWPS at the HZ Cross Country championships, held at Brenan Park, Smithfield. While there was bright sunny skies it was quite windy which did make running a little difficult. However, our students pushed through, doing their best and achieved some pleasing final positions. At the end of the day FWPS placed 11th out of 17 schools.
Winter PSSA
On Friday 22 May, FWPS PSSA teams competed in the first Horsley Zone Winter Competition day in 2026. Junior League Tag & Senior Rugby League travelled to Chisholm Park, Netball and Senior Basketball played at Endeavour Reserve, Junior Basketball played at Smithfield PS, Girls Football played at Brenan Park with Boys Football playing at King Park Oval.
On Friday 26 June, FWPS PSSA teams will compete in the second Horsley Zone Winter Competition day, with three more competition days set down in Term 3.
Cockatoo Island
Our Year 5 and 6 students went on an exciting excursion to Cockatoo Island. The adventure began with a bus ride, followed by a ferry trip across the water. The ferry ride was full of excitement as students enjoyed amazing views of beautiful houses along the shore, and Australia’s iconic landmark, The Harbour Bridge!
The students took part in a special program to discover the island’s rich history. They explored how Australian society has changed over time and learned about the important ways the past shapes our lives today. Students visited old jail cells that were small and cramped, giving them a real sense of what life was like for prisoners long ago. They also explored sandstone tunnels and saw the old naval dockyard where navy ships were once built and repaired.
The group toured around the entire island, experiencing the fascinating past. It was a fantastic day full of learning, adventure, and great memories!
ANZAC Day
On Friday 24 April Fairfield West Public School held an ANZAC Day Ceremony to commemorate veterans and service personnel who served in world wars, peacekeeping missions and recent conflicts.
Our school has a rich tradition of commemorating this day with a student-run ceremony. Students read a range of ANZAC poems and laid flowers at the base of the flagpole as we acknowledged family members who served. Our special guest, Mr Steven Cosgrove, came from Smithfield RSL to address the students on the significance of the day and shared some wartime food ration samples.
We thank the community for their support of the day with their strong attendance and generous supply of floral tributes.
Parramatta Blitz Incursion
During our recent Parramatta Eels School Blitz, students in Stage 2 and Stage 3 participated in an engaging incursion in the school hall focused on the importance of health and wellbeing. The session empowered our students to make positive choices for a healthy lifestyle, perfectly complementing the goals of our Fit Futures program. By connecting with professional athletes, our students saw firsthand how physical activity and a positive mindset are key to "Beeing the Best Me."
Life Education
Life Education offers a range of age-appropriate modules aligned to the curriculum in Health and Physical Education and General Capabilities. Each module is designed to inspire and empower students, providing knowledge, skills and strategies around topics of physical health, safety and social and emotional wellbeing, all through interactive learning experiences.
Year 5 students enjoyed meeting Harold, who taught them strategies to help maintain positive online and offline relationships and learn how to recognise, react and report unwanted contact, bullying or predatory behaviours.
Kindergarten's First Day
Our kindergarten students began their first day of school with bright smiles and great enthusiasm. Welcomed warmly by their teachers and staff, they explored their new classroom and school, learned about school routines and participated in a variety of interactive, hands-on learning activities. As they settled into their new environment, they also began forming new friendships. This marks a wonderful beginning to an exciting year of growth, learning and fun.
